WWCC 'A' Vs Jets Aardvarks - 23rd September 2009

This fixture was being played at Queens instead of West Herts due to the unavailability of the home side's venue on the Wednesday night. Luckily there was a spare table and the fixture could go ahead as per the schedule.

The two teams finished winners and runners up in the last season, and with Aardvarks suffering with some walkovers and lost points due to Geof Bax's unfortunate accident in the previous week, were keen to make amends fielding a strengthened side with Antony Budden.

WWCC got off to a good start with Roger Pyle winning against Max Bonyadi and Chris Ogle getting the better of Larry Gregory. Aardvarks came back strong with Antony Budden beating Alan Thomas, and nearly drew level with Max losing out in the 5th set in a close encounter with Chris Ogle. Roger Pyle struggled to get to grips with Antony Budden's double sided pimpled rubbers and lost in 4 legs, whilst Alan Thomas was victorious in a long battle with his old team mate Larry Gregory. The match was now poised at 4-2 for WWCC with two games to play.

The time was already approaching 10pm and so the two final games were going to have to be played on two table. Chris Ogle and Antony Budden both with two wins under their belts promised to be a close encounter and indeed it was with Antony Budden the eventual winner at 11-8 in the fifth leg.

The Match now stood at 4-3, a lot rested on the doubles game! Roger Pyle and Alan Thomas were already 2-0 up against Max Bonyadi and Larry Gregory when the last singles game finished, and although evenly balanced at 6-6 in the 3rd leg, WWCC went on to win the doubles game and the match 5-3.

A thoroughly enjoyable game although not the best start for Aardvarks for their 2009/10 campaign, whereas WWCC are once again at the top of the Premier division!

Second Weeks Matches w/c 21st September 2009

This week saw some good performances in Div One. Russell Davies provided one of these for West Watford ‘B’ but his team still lost 3-5 to Eagles. Sally Bax was also unbeaten for Gazelles in a drawn match vs Post Office. Derek Robinson and Jim Constable were outstanding in the 7-1 defeat of Oxhey Hall ‘A’.

In Div Two, Oxhey Hall ‘B’ fared no better than their ‘A’ team, also losing 1-7, to Iguanas for whom Dale Nichol and Kris Kepa were unbeaten. Watling ‘C’, with Peter Meisel winning all his games were too good for Kangaroos, who lost 2-6. Hounds with only two players, Karl Seddon and Gerry Evans, won all their games to beat Audit ‘A’ 5-3.

In Div Three, good all round team efforts, resulted in Watling ‘D’ and Newts drawing their match. Tom Sapundziev won his three games in Audit ‘B’’s win over Meerkats.

In the Premier Div, Antony Budden of Aardvarks,put in a superb performance in winning his three games against a very strong West Watford ‘A’ team, who went on to win the match 5-3. Abbots Langley came second in a closely fought match vs Cougars for whom Tony Dias was undefeated.

Finally we have some match comments from those taking part in the Bats vs Fullerians match. ‘A very close game with five matches going to five legs. The match was uncertain until the seventh game where Denis Robinson beat Neil Seaholme in one of the five set matches. Fullerians gained a 5-3 victory, with David Warren and Steve Leven beating Caroline Wilkes and Trafford Coker in another close game, the Bats pair winning 16-14 in the fourth leg’.

Table Tennis Action 23rd September 2009 at Queens

Here is some great action taken by Chris Ogle on Wednesday 23rd September at Queens school home of the Jets table tennis club. All these matches are part of the Watford & District Table Tennis league. Action here from two premier matches and Eagles vs WWCC from Division one.

Match report FULLERIANS v JETS DOLPHINS

Match Played : 16th September 2009

This was a match that didn’t really go to script as hot favourites Fullerians were made to work hard for a draw in a match they would probably have expected to win quite comfortably. Dolphins gave a full Premier Division debut to Ralph Taylor, with the team completed by the more experienced duo of Kevin Williams and Gordon Cape. Fullerians put out the impressive line up of Denis Robinson, Caroline Wilkes and Trafford Coker.

Fullerians started strongly with straightforward wins for Denis and Caroline over Ralph and Gordon respectively. Trafford was then beaten by Kevin to bring the tie a little bit closer, followed by Ralph and Caroline playing the match of the night with Ralph emerging the close winner in the 5th. So, 2-2 at that point, until Denis comfortably beat Kevin 3 straight and things were then looking to be back on track for the favourites. However, in the next match, Gordon managed to hold himself together against Trafford to achieve his first singles win of the new season. With time pressing on, play moved to a second table with Kevin just able to repel Caroline’s crisp backhand for long enough to escape with a 3-1 win. 4-3 to the Dolphins and a big upset still on the cards until Denis and Trafford combined well to snatch the draw for the home team.

Fullerians were probably a bit disappointed not to have won the match given their classy and experienced team, but they have a strong squad and will come back as the season progresses. As for the Dolphins, it will be a long hard season but if this performance is anything to go by they’ll be fighting all the way!!

Cougars vs Abbotts Langley

A big thanks to Tony Dias, for the first ever match report (other than mine) received on the Watford Table Tennis blog site. I hope this starts a match report rush from now on in! As you can see the reports don't have to be volumous or that long - just a fair and fun overview of the game.

Cougars started well winning the first 3 games with Graham Gorb beating Alan Phipps, Richard Bellamy beating Phil Evans in a game of fluctuating fortunes, Tony beating Mick Lowens. Graham then lost to Phil, Tony was made to work hard for his win over Alan. Richard won his encounter with Mick leading to the final singles match between Phil and Tony which the latter won 12-10 in the 5th game. This match was a good one to watch with both players giving it their best. The doubles was won by the Abbots Langley pair of Mick Lowens and Alan Phipps who surprised Graham and Richard.

Once again a big thanks to Tony, would be great to get some pictures and video, whenever i'm at a match, especially at queens, i will take as much video as i can, but may need some help on peoples names and teams, as i don't know everyone in the leagues. If you spot yourself in a video and it's not correctly labelled, drop me a note and we'll sort it.

Watford TT Academy - WBGS Update

Great News for Students at Watford Grammar School, Urban Progress TTPro, Table Tennis in Watford and Watford Sport is the confirmation of the Opening date for the Watford Grammar School Table Tennis Academy.

The Table Tennis Academy will open its doors on Wednesday 7th October for the first time with an exciting programme for the 1st day!

• 3:30pm - 4:30pm Table Tennis & Coaching for the students of WBGS
• 5:00pm - 7:00pm Junior session for Urban Progress Members from the community
• 7:30pm - 10:30pm Senior Table Tennis session for Urban Progress TTPro members
• The opening evening will also include a Watford Premier League Table Tennis match with WWCC moving their home venue to WBGS

Non members can attend the open adult evening session for a £5 flat fee

Urban Progress TTPro will operate at the school the Wednesday sessions as described above, and on Fridays a breakfast session (for students) as well as the Junior and Adult evening sessions.

It is envisaged that a Sunday morning training from 10:00am through to 1pm will be announced shortly which will commence during October in addition to the activity during the school week.

I'm sure you will all agree that this is an exciting development for all in Table Tennis in the Watford area and we look forward to welcoming some new young Table tennis players into the sport and perhaps even joining the competitive Watford & District Table Tennis league.

Watford Boys Grammar Table Tennis Academy update

Everyone is now back to school and settling in... so now the Watford Table Tennis Academy being hosted by Watford Boys Grammar School is again moving forward. Thursday 24th September there is a meeting with the Sports / Games / PE members of staff and Urban Progress TTPro to finalise the start date and agree the sessions.

Hopefully more details on this will become clear Thursday... look out for further developments and announcements in the coming week. 

WATFORD & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE UPDATE

A new season starts, but a setback for the Champions.

Last seasons Champions, Aardvarks had ‘hard luck’ when they lost their opening match to Bats, 5-3. A Stuart Seaholme maximum and two conceded games meant they they had equalled last seasons one loss after just one match. Geof Bax had an unfortunate injury, with him ending the evening in A&E, but after x-rays and examinations it was found that there were no bad injuries, and after a few uncomfortable days things were easing, and he should be playing again in two weeks.

West Watford ‘A’ got off to a better start, but surprisingly dropped a point to Abbots Langley, Chris Ogle again playing well was unbeaten.

In Div One, the relegated sides, Post Office and Eagles, both lost their opening matches, to West Watford ‘B’ and Watling ‘B’, who had been promoted from Div Two. Paul Phillips starred for Watling, and Nick Alwyn did likewise for W.W.  Falcons beat Watling ‘A’ 6-2, with Peter Denholm being unbeaten. Gazelles beat newly promoted Oxhey Hall ‘A’ by the same score, Dave Sims their star.

In Div Two, Promoted Oxhey Hall ‘B’ played well to draw with Jaguars, and it was all round efforts from both teams, that secured this result. Another draw was played between Hounds and Kangaroos, both teams fancied to do well. Iguanas had Dale Nichol to thank for their 5-3 victory vs Watling ‘C’.

In Div Three, two man Ospreys did well to draw with Audit ‘B’, and their Geoff Lines was unbeaten. Meerkats, a team of juniors, beat Watling ‘D’ 7-1, Ishan Bairoliya and Jason Olney both unbeaten. Lions win was even more emphatic, they won 8-0 vs Newts. Their team of Dave Bowyer, Bob Wyard, and Roger Dean ‘doing the business’.
