Jets Cougars Vs WWCC 'A' Premier Div. Cup Semi Final - 26th Nov

Cougars fielding a strong side with Captain Tony Dias, Paul Erdunast and Richard Bellamy were looking to upset a boyant 'top of the table' WWCC 'A' side, represented by the regular trio of Chris Ogle, Roger Pyle and Alan Thomas.

Paul Erdunast has still a bit to learn as the experienced Roger Pyle took the first rubber 3-0, Tony Dias set the match even though with a straight sets comfortable win over Alan Thomas who is having a strange year for sure in the Watford League.

Richard Bellamy lost out 3-0 to Chris Ogle for the WWCC to edge again into the lead, before Tony Dias secured his second victory over Roger pyle in as many weeks and returned the match to 2-2.

Next up Paul Ernudast took the first leg comfortably against Chris Ogle and looked to be on course to cause a bit upset for the night, but Chris regained his composure taking the next 3 legs to push WWCC into a 3-2 lead. Richard Bellamy played an outstanding match against Alan Thomas to almost clinch the 6th game of the night but Alan following some good advice from team mate Roger managed to introduce some variation into the game and pinch the rubber in the 5th leg.

Tony Dias now looking to keep the match alive taking on Chris Ogle who has in recent times had the better of Tony, although Tony has beaten Chris in the past. Chris took the first two legs, however a slight change in tactics enabled Tony to keep his side in it now 2-1 Chris. The fourth set was more cagey that the others with both players keeping a few points within each other, but Chris in the end took the victory 3-1.

So the semi final ended with WWCC 'A' the victors 5-2, the doubles was not played. Good spirited game... thanks to Stuart for setting the table and surrounds up well in advance of the match kick off.

N.B. We believe the other semi final was won by Fullerians however no match report has come forth... would be good if some of the other CUP (or indeed league) results were forwarded for inclusion here... not just those that WWCC participate in !!!

WATFORD & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE

In Div Two, Hounds continue to play well and had a 6-2 win vs. Audit ‘A’, although the visitors only had two players. Iguanas also dropped a point in winning 5-3 vs. Oxhey Hall ‘B’, with Dale Nichol their star. Third placed Kangaroos could not gain ground with a 6-2 victory vs. Watling ‘C’. Andy Wilson undefeated for ‘K’’s.

In the Third Div, Ospreys had a good win vs. Panthers although most games went to four or five legs. 7-1 the score, with Jamie Salisbury, and John Bones winning all their games. Two man Meerkats put up a spirited performance against a vastly more experienced team, Audit ‘B’, and went down fighting 2-6.

In Div One, dark horses West Watford ‘B’, with games in hand shocked second placed Eagles with a 6-2 win, but it took 32 tough legs to get the result. Richard Cottle the winners star. Post Office also had a hard match with third placed Gazelles, 5-3 the winning score, Les Leech undefeated for PO. Falcons just behind ‘G’’s easily defeated Oxhey Hall ‘A’ 7-1, with Peter Denholm, and Jim Constable winning their games. An, in club battle between the Watling’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ saw no quarter given as the ‘A’ team thrashed their opponents 8-0, Graham Spooner, Andrew Meisel, and Graham Roland showing no mercy.

In the Premier Div, no mercy was shown to last seasons Champions as they were dispatched 7-1 by West Watford ‘A’, Roger Pyle, and Alan Thomas undefeated. The one Aardvark game was an excellent win for Max Bonyadi vs. Chris Ogle. Bottom placed Abbots Langley gained a very good draw with Cougars, with Ken Stonebridge winning three for Abbots.

Roger Pyle & Chris Ogle in County Duty

Last Saturday 21st November 2009, Chris and Roger represented Hertfordshire in the first round of the 3rd Division Veterans competition at St. Neots Table Tennis Club.

Chris was playing at No.1 and Roger at No.3. with Mark McCarthy at No.2 and June Nelson as the lady in the team.

The County championship has a different order to most events with each man playing two singles, one ladies single, two mixed doubles and a mens doubles. The doubles having a very siginificant role in the eventual outcome of any match.

The first match was Herts 3 vs Cambs 2, with a resounding 8-2 victory for Herts. Roger and Chris winning all their singles and the doubles in straight sets.

The second match against Bucks 2 was a different story. Herts went 4-0 down before Mark McCarthy pulled out the Home teams first set. Herts eventually lost out 6-4 Chris and June losing the final mixed doubles 11-9 in the 5th to miss out on picking up a draw.

Both Roger and Chris ended up with 3 singles wins from 4 and won both the mens doubles. A few pictures below from the day.

WWCC take first maximum against Aardvarks!

Thursday 19th Nov. WWCC took their first 4 point victory against a weakened Aardvarks side. WWCC playing their usual Chris Ogle, Roger Pyle and Alan Thomas whereas Aardvarks had Larry Gregory, Max Bonyadi and Geof Bax playing his first match against WWCC for a couple of years. Anthony Budden is recovering from an illness and a hospital stay.. we all wish him a speedy recovery.

Roger Pyle got WWCC club off to a flying start with a straight 3-0 win over Geof Bax, Alan Thomas then consolidated the lead by beating Max in a 5 set thriller which in the end went Alan's way.

Chris then came out a 3-1 winner against Larry who couldn't quite take it to the 5th leg decider. Roger then came out the winner 3-1 against Max to take the score to 4-0. Chris up next against Geof who was suffering with a strain injury following the game against Roger earlier in the evening. After the first leg it was clear Geof couldn't continue and unfortunately had to concede the game.

Alan next up against Larry. Alan has got the measure of his old team mate in recent years and today was no exception. The score now 6-0 to WWCC.

Chris and Max have had some good matches in the past this wasn't the spectacle it might have been, however Max came out the victor to serve Chris up with only his second defeat this season.

With the score at 6-1, is seemed that something might be salvageable from the match after all, and Geof Bax agreed to take to the table again in a super human effort to wrestle something from the fixture. Unfortunately Roger and Alan in full flow were too strong for a partially injured pairing of Larry and Geof.

W&DTTL Tournament Entry Form

This year the annual Closed Watford League tournament will be held from the 5th to the 10th January 2010 at Queens School.

It is hoped that the Junior events will be held on Tuesday 5th, The Divisional Singles and Mens Doubles events on Wednesday 6th, The Veterans and Handicap singles on Thursday 7th. The Mens and Ladies singles will be held on Sunday 10th as well as the Mixed Doubles. The finals will start on Sunday 10th from approximately 4:30pm with refreshments afterwards.

WATFORD & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE

Top of the Premier Div, Fullerians are looking to their former glories to re-emerge, and this week with an 8-0 win vs. Dolphins they are now only one point behind West Watford ’A’ who continued their seasons results in which they have dropped a point per match. Their opponents this week Abbots Langley gaining a point in a 2-6 loss. Aardvarks also dropping a point, but no surprise this vs. Bats, for whom Stuart Seaholme was unbeaten, in A’s 5-3 win.

In Div One, Eagles have joined Post Office at the top, both equal points and equal sets. Eagles beat two man Watling ’B’ 6-2, and Post Office beat West Watford ’B’ 5-3, Russell Davies winning three for WW. Watling ’A’ had a good win playing Falcons, 5-3 the score, and Graham Smith starring for Falcons. Third placed Gazelles dropped a point to Oxhey Hall ’A’ 6-2 the score.

In Div Two, Hounds and Iguanas still lead the way, although both dropped a point. Karl Seddon was unbeaten for the former in their 6-2 win vs. Kangaroos. Peter Meisel was also unbeaten for Watling ’C’ but his side lost 3-5 to Iguanas. There was a first victory of the season for Oxhey Hall ’B’ and a resounding one at that, Jaguars well beaten 7-1, Dave East and Brian Whitehead both unbeaten here.

In Div Three, Audit ’B’ win yet again 8-0, Ospreys this weeks victims. Another 8-0 win, was between Lions and Newts, the former the winners.Roger Dean, Bob Wyard, and Dave Bowyer the Lions team.

In a postponed Cup match, Fullerians beat Aardvarks 5-3, and will play Dolphins in the semi final.

WWCC 'A' Vs Abbots Langley - 11th Nov 2009

Second league game for WWCC 'A' at their new home Watford Boys Grammar School, this time facing Abbots Langley who are languishing at the bottom of the Premier Division. Two injuries for this fixture... Howard Davies the WWCC 'A' captain still nursing a dodgy knee, and Mick Lowens who has pulled a muscle during fitness training in preparation for this match.

Ken Stonebridge is in high spirits after his big win against Stuart Seaholme last week and ably supported by Phil Evans and new signing Mike. WWCC 'A' have their regular three out Chris Ogle, Roger Pyle and Alan Thomas.

First Game on Roger vs Phil. Roger getting WWCC off to a flying start with a straight sets win as did Chris against mike 2-0. Alan Thomas having reverted back to some slower rubbers to try and regain some form went down in a close first two legs to Ken, the final leg was more convincing... the match score now 2-1. Chris then played Phil 3-0 to Chris Ogle and then Roger played Ken and came up trumps with a 3-1 win... the score now 4-1 to WWCC 'A'. Alan Thomas in all sorts of trouble lost 3-0 to Mike and commented after this game that he cannot ever remember in the Watford league ever not winning at least one leg in a match... that's one to commit to the history books then Mr. Bax !!

4-2 and now Chris playing Ken. Chris took this in straight sets which left the doubles to go which Roger and Alan comfortably took also in straight sets.

The Match ended with WWCC 'A' winning 6-2 another victory now 7 straight wins and with Abbots langley to reflect on what might have been and how they might lift themselves from the bottom position.

The game was played in a great spirit, much mirth and banter to compliment a good evenings table tennis.

In Div Two this week there was the clash of the two top teams and Hounds came out on top playing Iguanas. Gerry Evans starred for Hounds in their 5-3 win. Oxhey Hall ‘B’ picked up valuable points when they drew with Watling ‘C’ for whom Peter Meisel was unbeaten. A weakened team for Audit ‘A’ were well beaten by Jaguars for whom John McShane shone.

In Div Three, top and bottom met and it was a runaway win for top team Audit ‘B’ who beat Panthers 8-0. Gordon Hitchman, John Hutchison, and Dave Steuart were the winning team. There was a much closer match between Watling ‘D’ and Ospreys with the former winning the two final games for a 5-3 win. Simon Pyzer won his three games for the winners.

In Div One, the top team Post Office dropped a point to the bottom team, Oxhey Hall ‘A’, giving them only their second point. Eagles who had led for most of the season could only draw with Falcons, this was a tough match of thirty two legs. Ian Banfield was unbeaten for Eagles. An even longer match of thirty three legs saw Watling ’A’ just pip Gazelles 5-3, Andrew Meisel the Watling hero. Watling ’B’ also won, beating two man West Watford ’B’ 5-3.

In the Premier Div, West Watford ’A’ who have managed to win every match and yet drop a point every match , did so again vs. Cougars, winning 5-3, with Chris Ogle starring for WWCC. Aardvarks surprisingly dropped a point to Dolphins, two players losing for the first time to Kevin Williams. Geof Bax won his three for the ‘A’s. Steve Leven was the star for Bats when they beat Abbots Langley 6-2., there was an excellent win for Ken Stonebridge of Abbots who beat the reigning League Champion Stuart Seaholme.

Abbotts Langley takes on Jets Bats

Jets Bats 6-2 Abbots Langley
4th November 2009

Ken Stonebridge rescued a Premier Division point for struggling Abbots Langley with a magnificent victory over Stuart Seaholme - reportedly the first of his career (although no-one can quite remember). Ken blunted Stuart's killer backhand and ran out a comfortable winner by three sets to one.

Earlier, Dave Warren and Steve Leven had raised hopes of a Jets maximum with comeback victories over Phil Evans and Ken Stonebridge respectively.
