County Honours abound from local Watford players!!

On 29th Oct & 30th Oct Watford players Stuart Seaholme, Dennis Division.Robinson & Sally Bax were joined by Derek Balding from Ware to represented Hertfordshire O'60's at Milton Keynes in County Premier Division.a point so all to play for next time. First match vs Yorkshire we go down 7-3. Second match vs Kent and 5-5 draw. Last match vs Essex, last years winners and another 7-3 defeat. Just 1 point from 3 matches. Still there are at least 2 counties without a point so all to play for in the last matches again at Milton Keynes later in the season.
 
On the 12th & 13th Nov Glen Wilkes & Stuart Seaholme represented Hertfordshire O'40's in Division 1 playing at Wolverhampton. They were joined by Jimmy Walsh & Emma Rose. 8-2 win against Worcestershire, 4-6 defeat to Lincolnshire and finally a 5-5 draw against Cleveland leave them mid table. In January they play their final 4 matches at Milton Keynes.

Watford players on County duty - 12th November

Saturday 12th November Roger Pyle and Chris Ogle were on County vets duty in St. Neots representing the county 3rd team. Although the organisation left a bit to be desired, the Herts team of Chris Ogle, Roger Pyle, David Langham and Faith Frankel took on first Essex 3 in the morning session and then Berkshire 2 in the afternoon. Herts picked up two wins, 6-4 against Essex and 7-3 against Berks... The match sheets are shown below for those interested... this put Herts once again in the pole position going into the second weekend where we should have our full team on parade!

Watford have 'double European Table Tennis Champion'

The Watford League can celebrate having a double European Table Tennis Champion now that Sally Bax, of the Watford Jets Club, has just won the over 70’s singles and doubles (partnered by Jean White of Lincolnshire) in those events that have just taken place in the ninth European Table Tennis Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, during 20-25 June 2011.

The doubles proved to be a strong event, and Sally and Jean had to come from 2-1 down in the final against German opposition, to win 5-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4, 11-8.

In the singles Sally was surprised to find she was the number one seed, but went on to justify that position, and only dropped one leg throughout the group stage, and the knockout stage and that was in the final against another English lady, Doreen Schofield of Cheshire, the current National over 70’s Champion. Sally won 11-8, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9.

These Championships proved to be tough for England in general, and we only got four other gold medals from the thirty two events played, ladies singles, over 80’s, and over 85’s, and over 85‘s doubles, and in the mens over 40’s doubles. We also got four silver and six bronze medals.

This was a superbly run tournament, in which 9,100 matches were played, and in great conditions, although one hall (of four) was rather hot, a great experience was enjoyed by all the 2,444 competitors.

Try Table Tennis Exhibition!

15th May 2011 NW London & Hertfordshire, “Try Table Tennis Exhibition and Coaching Day” at The Sports Hall, STAGS School, Sandridgebury Lane, St Albans, AL3 6DB

Try Table Tennis Exhibition (10am-1.00pm for all ages ) followed by Junior Training # (1.00–4.15pm, U19 only)

All playing levels catered for. Note #   reservations have to be made for junior training via email to the Herts County Junior Coach, but there are also shorter sessions for the drop-in juniors on the day.

There is a time slot for the senior league players to get some coaching from 12.00-12.30pm.

 
 

Anthony Close wins again... this time in Blackpool!

Anthony won the Under 11 Boys Singles at the Stiga Blackpool Junior 2 Star Open Table Tennis Championships Sunday 10th April.  He beat Waqas Ahmed (England No. 7) 3-1 in the semis and James Smith (England No. 4) 3-1 in the final.  Picture of Katie Parker, former England No.1 (and Jill's daughter?) presenting him with his trophy.

 

Reached the semis of the U13's losing to the No.1 seed Daniel Clark.

Watford Juniors in Final matches of National Junior League - 26th March

On Saturday 26th March Watford Jets played the last round of matches in the National junior League at Ellenborough TT club in Enfield. The team was Jordan Olney, James Smith and Jamie Fisher. The first match was against Ellenborough "A" who were pressing for the runners up spot. A creditable performance but 6-3 defeat with each of our boys securing a victory. Ellenborough eventually came 3rd. The final match was against the Ellenborough "B"team and excellance performance from the boys performance 3 wins from James and 2 each from Jamie and Jordan saw then home 7-2. Ellenborough "B2 finished 4th and Watford Jets were 5th. Total matches over the 4 rounds played 12 won 4 lost 8, 50 set for and 58 against. All players still eligible next year so the future is bright.

Watford Cadets in Action in National Cadet League - 13th March

Sunday 13th March was the last round of matches in the National Cadet League, First Division, at Ellenborough. The team Ishan Bairoliya, Jamie Fisher were joined by Alex Savva who was a late replacement for Fred Mummery who was called to play in a golf competition at Moor Park. First match was against Twickenham Brunswick "B" and the boys were in good form and scored a resounding 9-0 victory. Next up Ellenborough "A", who eventually finished second in the division, and this was much more difficult. The match was lost 7-1, Alex the only winner but Ishan lost 2 matches in the fifth and his other singles had 3 deuces in the four games. So near yet so far and spirits were blunted a little. The last match they faced Ellenborough "B" and the boys showed determination and turned their disappointment around to secure a 6-3 victory. Alex won his 3 singles and Ishan 2. The most exciting games were against the opposition number one. Alex won deuce in the fifth with 4 legs at deuce and Ishan lost 12-10 in the fifth with two other games lost at deuce. The crucial first lost at a nail biting 16-14. Over the four rounds they played 14 matches with 7 wins, 7 defeats, 60 sets for and 66 against and fifth place overall was very pleasing as this was first season in the competition.

Watford Players represent the County 12/13th March at Batts

Over the weekend of the 12/13 March 2011, Roger Pyle and Chris Ogle were in action for the county 3rd Vets team over at Batts in Harlow.

Going into the second weekend Herts were 1 point clear at the top of the division, with 2 weaker sides to play and the 3rd placed team Isle of Wight. The weekend got off to a rocky start with Herts going down 6-4 to Hampshire who were placed 2nd from bottom... and then drew in the afternoon with the Isle of Wight. Roger and Chris never seemed to really get going in either match... and although had their chances they never came to be.

Sunday was the final game against Wiltshire which Herts dominated and came out 9-1 victors. On Saturday Andy Nash and June Nelson played alongside Roger and Chris and on Sunday Brian Gale turned out as a reserve and won both his singles and the mixed doubles... not bad for a 77 year old!

Roger and Chris ended up winning 70% of their singles matches and the team finished 2nd in the division.
